Master the Basics: How to Properly Cut and Light a Cigar

For anyone new to premium cigars — or even a casual enthusiast — some of the most important moments in your smoking experience happen before you take the first puff. Learning how to cut and light a cigar properly can dramatically improve draw, flavor, and burn quality. Here’s everything you need to know.

Cutting Your Cigar

The cut matters because it determines how the smoke flows. Too much cut can unravel the wrapper; too little can choke the draw. The most common cuts are:

1. Straight Cut (Guillotine)
A punch straight across the head. Best for most shapes like Robustos, Churchills, and Toro sizes.

2. V-Cut
A single angled slice that creates a V-shaped notch. It increases surface area without overwhelming the head.

3. Punch Cut
A circular cut that makes a small, rounded hole. Ideal for smaller ring gauges.

No matter the tool you choose, aim to remove only the cap — that small portion at the tip — and avoid cutting too far into the wrapper. A clean, confident cut sets you up for a smooth experience.

Lighting Your Cigar

How you light it affects not only the taste but the burn and consistency. Here’s the right way:

1. Use the Right Flame
Butane lighters or cedar spills are best. Avoid gasoline/soldering torch lighters, which can alter flavor.

2. Toast the Foot First
Hold the flame near the foot (open end) without touching it. Rotate the cigar so the heat evenly warms the tobacco.

3. Draw While Heating
Once you see a glowing ember after toasting, bring the cigar to your mouth and puff gently while finishing the lighting. Rotate as needed to ensure an even burn.

A good light primes your cigar for an even temperature from start to finish — so take your time. It’s a ritual as much as a technique, and it enhances the overall experience.

Tips for a Better Smoke

  • Cut and light just before you start smoking.

  • If your cigar goes out, relight gently, don’t scorch it.

  • Store your cigars properly (we’ll dive into that in another blog).
